When Apple launched its first iPad, people were arguing that it might destroy Laptop category. It didn’t. Now three years and four generations of iPad down the line, tablets seem to have created a category of their own. So did it replace any category to the point of making them useless? No.
But it will soon.
Which? TV.
Flurry Analytics released a report on Smartphone and tablets usage. What had me was the usage by hour graph. If you look closely, tablet usage rises during prime time, that is, 7-11 PM and that’s no good news for TV.
Now if you look at the second graph, most people use tablets for gaming more than anything else. Again, it’s not indicative of people using tablets for gaming during prime time but we could assume that since the amount of time spent on gaming is substantially more than anything else.
However, this could change with more content being made available on Tablets. Tablets would work as a video consumption device since it has a larger screen compared to smartphones and is still portable. Recently,Times Internet (Indiatimes) had launched BoxTV, a video content destination modeled on Hulu and Netflix (US based video streaming services), which focuses on premium content, offering TV and movie video streams across devices, including on web browsers, iPhone and iPad, Android tablets and phones, and Windows 8 devices. There’s also Mundu TV in the market and Netflix is also said to be entering India. So, content companies targeting tablets is already a market trend.
Now I am not sure whether the report depicts a worldwide culture or just in the US. I have requested for a clarification, but we could easily assume that even if the report depicts a US phenomenon, it would take the same route in India 4-5 years down the line. It’s not surprising that everyone wants to crack the TV market.
