This Diwali we bought a new TV, yet another 32 inch LCD TV by Samsung. Got a Smart TV this time since they only sell those kinds these days.
However, I soon realized that my smart TV is not really that smart. It allows me to browse through content on the Internet, use apps such as Twitter, YouTube, and other awesome stuff. The only good thing I found about these smart TVs is that the apps are optimized for the TV screen. Browsing is horrible unless you use special QWERTY accessories. I did not feel the necessity to buy extra accessory since I figured quickly I would rather browse on my second screen (my android tablet) than on my smart TV.
It’s actually pretty dumb
But what’s missing the most among that is seamless integration of those services/apps along with the stream. For example, when I am watching Dexter, the series provides additional content such as YouTube videos and a game. My Smart TV should be able to hyperlink those videos when it displays on my screen. When I am watching adverts (yes I watch ads for the fear of forgetting what I’m watching), my smart TV should be able to link those products to eCommerce sites, so I can make a purchase. I want my smart TV to be there at the point of sale. Yes, I am the kind of those person who makes purchase decisions based on ads. My smart TV should not give me time to think how stupid my purchase going to be.
Until my TV does these, I’m just going to call it Dumb TV.
